Helen, Baird and Cory are greeted by Robert, Adrian and Victoria

On a beautiful clear, sunny and hot summer day our newly elected president Tom McDermott called his first meeting to order at 12:15 and lead us in the pledge of allegiance.  This was followed by an invocation given by Dick Jandt.

We had two visiting Rotarians, Doug Wieben from the Simi Valley Rotary Club (a guest of Bruce Cathcart and potential new member) and Bill Groth from the Livermore Rotary Club. Also in attendance was President Tom’s paralegal and right hand (wo)man the amazing Kathy Smith.

After some confusion about the lunch tickets… it appears that the Salmon Caesar salad is more popular than the number of lunch tickets available, President Tom announced that there will be a board meeting at his office on the 20th of this month starting at 5:30 PM.  Tom’s office is located off of Country Club west of Washington at 77530 Enfield Ln, Palm Desert, CA 92211.  Call Kathy at (760) 779-5800 if you get lost.

Also announced was the fundraiser for our very own Victoria Llort who is running for City Council.  It will be held tomorrow night 7/14 between 4 and 6 PM at the Grille in Old Town La Quinta.
And speaking of Victoria, she offered up the “Joke of the Week”.  Bill Cosgrove would be proud of her!
Not to be outdone, Gene Saluta, the guest of our speaker shared with us a story about the poor fellow stopped by a police officer at 2:00 AM.  When asked where he was going he said, “to a lecture on the evils of staying out late drinking and partying.”  The officer asked, “who would be holding such a lecture at this crazy hour?”  To which the man replied, “my wife!”
Our raffle was worth well over $115.00 today and Doug Motz drew the white marble to win only $5.00 of it!
Our Fine Master Allan Levin stepped to the podium and it being a new month auctioned off the fine free badge.  After some rather pathetic bidding Doug Motz was the winner for a paltry $25.00!  Corry Hunter paid up his IOU’s, there was some minor confusion about no make-ups with the new secretary not having been briefed on Levin’s Rules of No Make-ups (which basically is when in doubt put their name on the list and let them try and argue their way out of it!), but as usual several good natured, generous club members volunteered a few buck to the cause including Robert Wilkinson and Corry Hunter.  Surprisingly there were several members in attendance who had forgotten to wear their pins this day.  There were a few happy dollars here and there, most notably from and for Ed Casey’s return to the meetings.
There is a new sheriff in town and his name is Captain Roy Grace.  As our guest speaker today Roy shared with us that he has been a resident of La Quinta since 1998 but has been stationed in Blythe at the Colorado River Station where incidentally he was also a member of the Rotary Club of Blythe.  He was transferred to the Thermal station about a month ago replacing Capt. Andrew Shouse and becoming the new Chief of Police for the City of La Quinta.  Some interesting statistics that Roy shared with us about La Quinta included that the annual budget for police services is around $14,000,000.00 and pays for 14 police officers splitting up each 24 hour day (5, 5 & 4 per shift).  That also includes 911 sheriffs, a traffic team with 3 motorcycle officers and 1 traffic investigator, plus 6 community service officers who follow up on crime prevention and community problems, plus a SET (Special Enforcement Team) that focuses on quality of life issues and our homeless situation.  Add to that our volunteers that include 17 Citizens on Patrol and 9 office volunteers and you can see why our crime rate has fallen approximately 8% for the past two consecutive years.  Most amazing to me was the fact that our sheriff’s deputies handle 80 to 100 calls per day just in the City of La Quinta!  Roy made a great presentation ending with the fact that he plans to retire a year and a half from now with over 30 years of service of which approximately 20 were as a SWAT team member.  We are so proud to have you as our new Chief of Police and want you to know that as La Quinta Rotarians, “We’ve Got Your Back!”
At 1:45 President Tom called the meeting to a close with the Four Way Test.
