Greg, Merv and Joe are greeted this week by Tom and Jeff

Meeting was opened by President Corry at 12:13 PM.  Richard Jandt led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Invocation was given by Jeff Wattenbarger, who asked the creator to keep watch over all Rotarians in this unsettled world.  We had one visiting Rotarian, Attorney Ken Warner of Thousand Oaks Rotary Club, Thousand Oaks, CA.  Ken has been in Rotary for 41 years and has achieved perfect attendance.  Congratulations Ken!

Baird Boucher introduced his guest and our speaker this day, wine expert, Greg Hansen, the owner La Quinta Wine Co. who was to be our speaker of today.

President Corry making this week's announcements

President Corry re-iterated last week’s announcement of the upcoming Veterans Day “Tour de Palm Springs” Bicycle and Fitness-walk event to be held over a La Quinta to Palm Springs route on 10/25, sponsored by the Palm Springs Rotary Club.  Corry put out the call for volunteers to assist with the race-course signage installations on Friday, 10/24, and for the Take Down of the signs on Sunday 10/26.  See Corry if you can help!

Past President Sandy with her entry in the Chili competition

Immediate Past President Sandy Stewart reported that a good time was had by all who attended last Saturday’s Chili Cook-Off and Apple Pie Baking event at the La Quinta Hotel and Club, Sponsored by the L.Q. Chamber of Commerce.   Apparently Costco makes a pretty darn good Apple Pie as more than one was entered in the competition and it won the Best Pie Filling!  Next year the rules committee plans to be more specific in their instructions that all pies must be home made as well as "baked" by the entrant!

Nov. 8th, our club will hold an event at the La Quinta Museum.  More details to follow at upcoming meetings.  A barbeque fiesta is also being planned for our Ryla and Pryde kids and candidates.  Details to be announced.  Volunteers for this event and for Rotary Math Day will be needed.  Contact Joe LaMantia for details.

Elisa was our $5.00 raffle winner today

The weekly raffle was held, with the $5.00 winner this week being Elisa one of our favorite RaboBank Corporate members.

Favorite server Emilio brings us our ice cream pie!

New FineMeister, Walter Keating, nailed USC Watty (Jeff Wattenbarger) for $10.00 in memory of Jeff’s recent salmon fishing adventure.  Andy Lorenz coughed up $25.00 for his birthday of last Monday, who was immediately outdone by Ed Casey and his contribution of $80.00 for his wife Dell’s recent birthday.  David Turner popped for his accustomed $10.00, and Joe LaMantia gave $5.00 for general principals, followed by a $5.00 pop from Nick Kraushaar in celebration of his new Mazda 3.  Don Adolph pitched in $5.00 for the favorable survey results regarding the current City Council's performance for the City of La Quinta, and Greg Lane gave $5.00 for general happiness!

President Corry with our Speaker Greg Hansen

The Speaker of the Day, as announced above, was Greg Hansen of La Quinta Wine Co.  We learned of his remarkable breadth of knowledge and experience in the world of wines due to stints as Wine Manager at Trader Joe’s, Jensen’s and Safeway stores, and a lengthy sojourn as the proprietor of one of San Francisco’s premier high-end wine outlets.   His resume of additional managerial roles also included a few Wineries in the Sonoma and Napa Valley areas.  He successfully managed other wine stores before opening his present location on Washington Ave., (next to “Port of Subs”), in La Quinta (close to Baird Boucher’s Jewelry shop).  Greg holds tastings at his shop from 4:30 to 6:30 on Thursdays and Craft Beer Tasting events on Saturdays from 2-4 PM.  Greg invites all Rotarians to come and try out some of his selections.  For more information about the La Quinta Wine Company and for answers to several FAQ's about wine and craft beers go to their website at

The meeting was adjourned by President Corry at 1:15 PM with a recitation of the Rotary 4-Way test.
