Bob Woodward and Hal Tilbury are greeted by Bruce, Robert and Dick
We gathered together once again as Rotarians and friends at the Cliff House where President Tom called the meeting to order at 12:15 and lead us in the pledge of allegiance.  Sandy Lauer gave the invocation.
There were several visiting Rotarians in attendance from clubs from all over America and parts of Canada as well.  Of special note, Barry from South El Monte has returned to our club for the “season” and Abraham Thomas was in attendance along with his wife Anne.  Bruce Cathcart introduced his guest (and potential new member) Hal Tilbury who was attending his second meeting.
President Tom made the following announcements:
The next Board meeting will be held at President Tom’s office on February 15th starting at 5:30 PM.  Tom’s office is located off of Country Club west of Washington at 77530 Enfield Ln, Palm Desert, CA 92211.  Call Kathy at (760) 779-5800 if you get lost.
Our Strut Your Mutt will take place on February 11, 2017.  Please sign up at our next meeting to help at this fun event.
Ed Casey is back in Eisenhower and so we send him our positive thoughts and prayers for a short stay and quick recovery.
Our membership committee headed by Bruce Underwood and Diane Kelly announced that at the first meeting of each month they will be having a new member orientation meeting to help new members learn more about our club and Rotary in general.
We will once again be hosting our Wine Event at the La Quinta Museum this year on April 21st.  More info to follow on this popular event!
Joe LaMantia reminded club members that the easiest way to regularly contribute to the Rotary Foundation was through Rotary Direct.
Our raffle was worth well over $600.00 today and our visiting Rotarian Bob Woodward drew the white marble to win only $5.00 of it!
Tom then led us in the election of Corry Hunter to a three year term on the Foundation Board.
Our Fine Master Allan Levin stepped to the podium and instructed this month’s fine free badge holder (Bruce Cathcart) to circulate the collection basket among the members.  He immediately welcomed back Bob Wright who we have not seen in quite some time… and collected on some old debts!  There were a few no make-ups here and there, but since there are no member birthdays, spouse’s birthdays or anniversaries in the month of January,  Allan had to rely upon the generosity of the members in the way of happy dollars, of which there were many!  And then of course Dave Turner chipped in a few bucks for being just a tad tardy.
Our speaker this day was Rob Ballew, the executive director of the Family YMCA of the Desert.
Rob shared with us that the Family YMCA of the Desert is the largest provider of licensed childcare in the valley, with facilities from Palm Springs to Mecca. Desert Services began in 1982 and today they serve over 3,800 kids and families each day at forty one sites, with many opportunities in youth and family programming. The primary focus of the Family YMCA is to reinforce caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility while allowing kids to develop social skills, confidence, leadership, and fitness. Programming at the Y includes after-school care, computer math tutoring, basketball and flag football, sports and fitness, Youth and Government Program, karate, swimming, and Y Rookies Sports Leagues. More than one fourth of the children participating in the Y programs receive financial assistance, making community support a vital element in the ability to offer help to kids and their families. Eight years ago, special partnerships between the Family YMCA of the Desert and various local elementary and middle schools within all three valley school districts were launched to provide free, on-site after school care.
Rob, by his own admission was a better than average, but not a great speaker… and since there was no fee involved for his presentation he told us that he would give us a “good for nothing” speech!  Actually, it was a great presentation.  Thank you Rob!
At 1:30 President Tom called the meeting to a close with the Four Way Test.
