Marty Baskerville was a distinguished Affiliate Member of the La Quinta Rotary Club. He loved Rotary and brought a touch of elegance and decorum to our sometimes irreverent meetings. Marty showed all of us what it meant to be a dedicated Rotarian. He passed away last June. His daughter Laura forwarded the following notice of his passing to Diane Kelly, who asked that this be shared with our club members.

Henry Marwood Baskerville, Jr. (Marty) was born on January 26, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN. He passed away peacefully in his home on the shores of Lake Minnetonka on June 28, 2010. Preceded in death by his father and mother, Henry and Ione Van Dusen Baskerville and his wife of 56 years, Mary Sutton (Bootsie) Baskerville. He is survived by his caring wife of 8 years, Bette; his sons, Woody(Beth), Lewis and his daughter, Laura Becker(Terry) and eight wonderful grandchildren. A heartfelt expression of gratitude to his executive assistant of 30 years, Shirley Moen. Marty graduated from Shattuck School in 1942 and attended the University of Minnesota until leaving to serve as a pilot in the U.S. Air Corps in July, 1943; he later returned to the "U" for night classes and extension courses. He began his career at Western Oil and Fuel Company in 1945 where he held many positions in sales, marketing and advertising before becoming President in 1963. In 1971, Marty joined Riverway Co (then called Upper Mississippi Towing Company-UMTC). In 1977, Marty was named CEO and Chairman of the Board, a position he held until 2005. Many people count one's success by their business accomplishments, but Marty's strength was also in the relationships he fostered and maintained throughout his life. He was a member of Minneapolis Rotarty Club 9 (100% perfect attendance for 63 years, he was the current longest running term member.), World Business Council, MN Executives Organization,Marine Transportation Council, Psi Upsilon Alumni of MN and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was an avid sailor , skier, golfer, tennis player and swimmer. He was a member and past President of both Minikahda Country Club and Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA. He was an engaged philanthropist before such a term had meaning. One of his heartfelt commitments was to the YMCA where he had been a volunteer since 1969. He was commited to helping young teens and was an integral force in the creation of Y's Start, a program for at-risk middle school age students. Marty was thrilled to support and facilitate the Y's Start kids to attend a Summer Discovery program at Shattuck St. Mary's School in Faribault and for them to experience the Lake Minnetonka Sailing Program. Since Y's Start inception in 1994, 11,000 youth and staff have participated and been touched by this program. Marty was a charming, dignified man with a long-term record of service and commitment, a funny Poppa, beloved human being, wonderful Dad and husband, extraordinary gentleman and a man who truly accomplished what he set out to do . He has left quite a legacy. Well done good servant and in Marty's words, "WOW".
