Brett is met by Tom, Doug and Baird at the greeting table

President Sandy Stewart called the 36th meeting of the 28th year of La Quinta Rotary to order at 12:15.  Joe LaMantia  led the Pledge of Allegiance and Rey Neufeld gave the invocation.

Members and guests gather in fellowship

Visiting Rotarians included those from other Cities in CA and Washington.  Our newest candidate for membership Diana Weaver also joined us- probably one of the last times as a guest.  Heather Faris, wife of Wes Faris, also joined us for our meeting.

President Sandy makes this week's announcements

Allan Levin took a show of hands survey about serving beer at the Memorial Day Event at the Air Museum- with a majority voting yes, Allan will follow up with more details on this event time, etc.

Dick Jandt  gave an update for the City of La Quinta birthday celebration April 26th at the City Hall Park (Washington and Tampico) for the cooking and serving of hot dogs. We have enough signed up for prep and distribution but need some muscles to help set up and tear down.  This is a great event to meet and greet the citizens of La Quinta and show them who we are as proud La Quinta Rotarians.  We can't have too much help at this event so please show up and join in the fun... you even get a free hot dog cooked any way you like!

Board Meeting May 14th at Baird’s jewelry store at 5:30.  Boucher Fine Jewelers.

Sandy Stewart reminded those that still haven’t paid for their tee signs to please take care of this ASAP as we won’t have a bottom line number for our scholarships until these debts have been satisfied.  If you want to charge it to your credit card, please get in touch with Jennifer Donais and she will run it for you.  She will bring the Square to the meeting April 25th.

May 2-5  District Conference at Doral Hotel, Cathedral City.  Sandy Stewart asked for committee volunteers and help from Past Presidents. Our club will have a hospitality suite at the Doral and this year's theme will be Elvis songs.  Our song is "You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog" and we will be displaying many of our “Mutt” pictures and T-shirts.

Robert Wilkinson announced that Sandy Stewart’s demotion dinner will be held on Saturday, June 28th, 2014 at the La Quinta Resort- more details and an invite to come……

Archer residence is "flocked"

Flockmaster Doug Motz reported that the flock had landed at David Archer’s house and were en route again even though David hasn’t paid his removal fee as of yet...

Joe presents Wes with his first Paul Harris Award

Wes and Heather Faris are bound for Texas

Wes Faris  was presented his first Paul Harris pin and gave a small speech thanking the club for the past couple of years he has been a member.  Wes and his family are moving to Midland, Texas where most of their family is currently living.  We will miss Wes and thank him for all of his contributions while he was a member.  He promised to stop in a few times a year to visit.  We wish you, Heather, and the boys the best!

Favorite Server Amy with Chicken Caesar salads

Meet new Favorite server Daniela with Salmon Salad

Allan Levin, our notorious finemaster, took to the stage and fined numerous people for birthdays, anniversaries, notoriety in the Desert Sun, along with a few donations of happy dollars, and Dick Grund was one of the last donations again with happy dollars for the great article in the Gem on the Artisan’s studio.  Wes was also fined for his “departation tax” according to Allan- this finemaster has no limits!

Merv with the Ruth's Chris Certificate (YUM!)

Marc Rosen also had Allan auction off a $50.00 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris- courtesy of our old (favorite) server Ray who is now on staff at Ruth's Chris as a manager.  (Here's a little secret, ex-favorite server Ray is engaged to be married to current favorite server Shirle).  Merv Kolb was the winning bidder for the certificate.

Marc Rosen was one of two Rotarian speakers this day

Our speakers this week were Marc Rosen and Nick Kraushaar on the process of choosing our scholarship recipients from La Quinta high school.  Most of the people on the committee were new this year and found it to be very rewarding.  Marc took over as chairman of the scholarship committee last year at the request of Robert Wilkinson and with his teaching and counseling background, came up with a very thorough process which includes an application/portfolio score sheet along with interview questions and a second score sheet.

Nick Kraushaar was our second Rotarian speaker

Marc also shared with us a little about the CVEP matching scholarship program and how that is different from the straight scholarships that we give to the students each year.  Thank you to all who took the time to participate in the judging of the fine candidates that applied.  Once the process is completed we hope to have the scholarship recipients attend one of our upcoming lunch meetings.

President Sandy Stewart closed the meeting at 1:30 with the Four Way Test.
