La Quinta Rotarians gathered on Friday, September 10 at the Cliffhouse. Our President started out the meeting by promising to begin every week with a USC joke. This wasn't well received by all members, but did manage to get the majority of the group laughing. President Dan announced that the next Board Meeting with be held on Tuesday September 14 at 5:30PM at Nora Coleman's office (Wash & 48th behind Walgreens), the Fundraising Group will meet on Monday September 20 at Homewood Suites and the Club Assembly will be held in November. On October 8 we will have a speaker from the group study exchange and coming up is an Interact Pool Party for the student members. We acquired 3 new Rotary flags this week: 1 from the Brazilian Rotarian who was hosted by Judith Redwine and 2 from Lothar Vasholz's trip to Florida.

Joe LaMantia was the white marble raffle winner this week. Allan Levin collected money from Nora Coleman for no makeup, hassled Judith Redwine about an IOU and acknowledged Don Adolph and Frank Blum's wife's birthdays. It was determined by way of a democratic vote that Rotary Presidents should be exempt from paying for their demotion party. (By the way, Merv Kolb wants a refund!) Corry Hunter announced his recent engagement to his girlfriend Kristen and Walter Keating had a great cruise in Alaska. It appears that almost all members have paid their dues…finally!

Bob Leidner introduced our speaker Linda Evans, City Council woman and hospital administrator for Tenet Healthcare (JFK). She discussed JFK Hospital's community involvement and even brought us goodie bags with sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer. She announced that JFK recently went tobacco free meaning that there are no longer any designated smoking areas. She revealed the upcoming opening of the Volunteer Medicine Clinic in October at 48th and Jackson and said that they are still looking for volunteer staff. The Arthritis Foundation will hold a fundraising walk in November (did you know there are 120 different forms of arthritis?). Linda made us all smile when she jokingly reminded us that September is National Prostate Awareness Month with a green rubber glove!
