Rotary Club of La Quinta

Service above self since 1985

We had a great turnout for our Friday meeting.  Following the pledge and invocation, President David had our visiting Rotarians introduce themselves.  He then announced some upcoming dates.  The District Gala will be on November 4,5 and 6 at the Doral Hotel.  Our District Governor will visit the club in December.

Sergeant at Arms Alan had some easy pickings with a number of no make ups and late arrivals.  Birthdays and anniversaries were also recognized.

Dick and Helen Anderson started a “pass the hat” to kick start the fund to plant a tree in La Quinta in honor of Jacques Abel.  Over $400.00 was collected, putting us half way there.

Dick Jandt announced the passing of Jim Montgomery.  Jim was the Vice President of La Quinta Rotary at the time of its Charter Dinner in 1987

Our speaker was Mark Wasserkrug, owner of Guns of Distinction.  Mark gave us an overview of the gun purchasing process in California.  It is pretty straightforward to purchase rifles and shotguns.   You only need show valid California residence identification.  Handguns are more difficult to purchase.  There is a requirement for a background check, a ten day waiting period and successful completion of a handgun safety test.  Mark noted that there has been recent increase in handgun sales.  Most are for homeowners concerned for their safety at home.  Mark encourages those potential buyers to consider a taser instead of a handgun.  The personal taser can put a person down for 30 seconds, instead of the 5 seconds produced by a law enforcement taser.  This will give you sufficient time to decide what you should do next.  Calling 911 would be a good first choice.  Gun ownership is considered a sacred right by many.  But if you have a firearm at home, please make sure it is kept in a safe place, out of reach of children and locked in accordance with current regulations.
