Meeting Reports
Our speaker this day was Tom Kirk… not only a past member of our Rotary Club, but also a Past President of our Club.  Tom has been the Executive Officer of The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) for the last 10 years.  Prior to our hiatus in August we were fortunate to have Erica Felci the Governmental Projects Manager for CVAG who made an excellent presentation on the CV Link project.  Sitting atop the CVAG hierarchy Tom was able to give us an overview and slightly different perspective of all that CVAG is involved in and the various projects that are currently in progress.

Our speaker this day was our very own David Hammer.  David is our newest member and comes to our club with decades of service above self as a Rotarian.  David is an attorney specializing in taxes and financing.  He is a graduate of the oldest law school west of the Mississippi, UC Hastings College of Law.

Our speaker this day was introduced by Dr. Bruce as Erica Felci, the Governmental Projects Manager for the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG).  Erica was standing in for former Rotary Club of La Quinta member Tom Kirk, now the Executive Director for CVAG who was called off at the last minute.
Our speaker this day was Rod Vandenbos, the Founder and CEO of Buzzbox.  Rod addressed a very enthusiastic group this day and started off by sharing, “I make alcohol and I brought free samples!”  And it just got better from there…

Bob Wright introduced our speaker this day as Mary Perry, Desert Sands Unified School District’s “Go To Girl”!  He stated that if you needed to get something done or information regarding the DSUSD she was the one he could always count on and would go tosee at the district.
Bob Wright and President Robert both proudly announced that in addition to La Quinta High School Counselor Alice Pedersen, we had with us today 6 of this year’s 10 Rotary Club of La Quinta’s Scholarship recipients in attendance.  This is always one of my favorite programs of the year as we receive the heartfelt thanks from the students themselves and learn a little more about each of them and their plans for the future.  Each year the caliber of students chosen seems to go up with this year being no exception!
President Robert introduced our very own Dr. Dennis “Denn” Denning.   Dr. Denning is known as a Pastor, Rotarian, Theologian, Sports Fan, Avid Reader and a Jazz Pianist.  He spoke to us about “The Life and Times of C.S. Lewis and his Literary Impact.”

Denn began his presentation by sharing with us a little more about himself and then how the works of C.S. Lewis had influenced him and his thinking on Christianity.  “Mere Christianity”, one of the 70 books written by C.S. Lewis, clearly had the greatest influence on Denn’s thinking about Christianity.
President Robert introduced our very own Dr. Bruce Underwood. Bruce is the Vice President of Healthy Futures & preventive care specialist who has dedicated his life to health and healing. Preventive Care Specialists provide integrated lifestyle counseling in the areas of addictive behaviors, exercise, nutrition, and stress for the prevention and treatment of chronic and degenerative diseases. This lifestyle counseling is provided on a personal, individualized basis

President Robert introduced our two speakers this day as Andrew Andrus and Kimberly Kristoff, two Border Patrol agents currently working out of the Indio Station.  Their topic was “U.S. BORDER PATROL OVERALL MISSION”.  Matt has served for over 10 years at the Indio Station and Kim has served 11 years at the Indio Station.  They are of the station’s Strategic Planning and Operations Team.

President Elect Dr. Bruce Underwood introduced our speaker today as Pastor Robert L. Cummings  or“Coach C”.  Robert has been married for 39 years to Cheryl and they have four children and 5 granddaughters.  He is the Co- Author of Focusing on your Dreams – 2006, U. S. Army Retired 26 Years / Chaplain Assistant 6 Years, NBA Chaplain for the Los Angeles Clippers 2004-2011, Inducted into the Marital Arts Hall of Fame 2010 – 40 Years and Athletic Director / Chaplain for the Indio SoCal Coyotes, America’s #1 Developmental Football Program for the NFL - 5 Time Champions – 2013-2018.

Bob Wright introduced our speaker this day as our beloved past La Quinta Rotary Member Deborah McGarrey.  Deborah is the Public Affairs Manager for Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), is responsible for all external public affairs as it relates to SoCalGas in the Morongo Valley, Eastern Riverside and Imperial Counties. Her main responsibility is the liaison between SoCalGas and the municipalities they serve in the community. She has over 20 years of Public Affairs experiences and serves on many nonprofit boards and committees within the Coachella and Imperial Valleys. She was the recipient of the 2004 Athena Award from the City of Palm Desert.

Bill Glowka introduced our speaker this day as Catherine Omanyo who was accompanied by her husband Daron.

Catherine is the founder and Director of the Imprezza Academy located in the western region of Kenya. Founded in 2001, Catherine's aim was to give children who could not afford school fees the chance to learn. She herself could not afford to go to school but she achieved an education by sneaking into lessons and persuading teachers to let her take exams. She was determined others would not have to do the same.

Our speaker this day was Gretchen Gutierrez.  Gretchen Gutierrez is the CEO of the Desert Valleys Builders Association (DVBA), a position she has held since August 2011.  Prior to joining the DVBA, she served as CEO for Friends of the Desert Mountains from April 2010 thru May 2011.
Our speaker this day was Eric Davenport.  Eric Davenport is a local chiropractor at Gonstead Family Chiropractic and a fellow Rotarian with the Indio Sunrise Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Eric has a passion to serve our youth both inside and outside of his practice. Eric has served as Director of Youth Services coordinating both RYLA and PRYDE programs and serves as the Team/School chiropractor for Indio and Shadow Hills High Schools.
