Meet Three Of This Year's La Quinta Rotary Scholarship Recipients

Posted by Bruce Cathcart on Jun 09, 2017

Penny, Nick, Doug, Rey, Allan and Walter are greeted by Sandy Robert, and Kevin

President Tom called the meeting to order at 12:15 and lead us in the pledge of allegiance. Walter Keating gave the invocation.

We had no visiting Rotarians this day and only our scholarship recipients attending today as guests.

President Tom made the following announcements:

The LAST Board meeting will be held at President Tom’s office on June 21st starting at 5:30 PM.  Tom’s office is located off of Country Club west of Washington at 77530 Enfield Ln, Palm Desert, CA 92211.  Everyone is welcome!

We will be DARK on the June 30th meeting.

Immediate Past President Doug shared with us that the DEMOTION Party will be held this year on Wednesday evening, June 28th beginning at 5:30 at the Cliff House.   The cost is $25.00 per person and includes unlimited Fish Tacos and other appetizers, plus all the free water that you can drink.  Those looking for more spirited beverages will be on the pay as you go plan.  This will be the last social event of Tom’s tenure as president so let’s all make an effort to show up and say “THANKS” for all his hard work this past Rotary year as well as honoring our “Rotarian of the Year” Sandy Stewart.  Doug will have the signup sheet at the next meeting.

Doug also passed around Rotary Foundation contribution forms encouraging members to donate NOW while the district is offering matching $$$/points and in hopes of continuing our club tradition of achieving the President’s Citation Award again this year.

Nick announced that the tree planting at the top of the cove in honor of Adrian and Ed, on the advice of our own tree planting expert Bob Wright, will take place sometime in September when the weather is cooler and our trees will have a better chance of survival.  Thanks for taking the lead on this project Nick!

With about $137.50 in the raffle and still a bag full of white marbles our chief of police Roy drew… wait for it… a white marble… winning $5.

Our Fine Master Allan Levin enlisted the aid of Bruce C. to carry the basket… and since he is also the scribe for this report, little was recorded in the way of who got fined and for how much… OK, nothing was recorded!  But I do remember that Brett Anderson and his wife Colleen have the same anniversary (June 14th) as my wife Lora and I do… so we each paid a buck a year totaling $68 for our combined marital bliss.  Other than that, Allan nickeled and dimed as many members in attendance as he could before calling it a day.

Nick introduced our speakers this day as Nang Nguyen, Viviana Dominguez and Kayleen Sullivan; three of our La Quinta High School Senior Scholarship recipients. All of these girls held extremely high GPAs and were very gracious in their “thank yous” and in responding to the many questions asked by our members. In addition to her studies and working in her parent’s restaurant Nang was Queen Shahrazad at this year’s Riverside County Fair and Date Festival.  She plans to attend UC Riverside in the fall and to pursue a degree in Pharmacy.  Her biggest challenge in high school was learning to speak English as she had only entered the US from Viet Nam 6 years prior to graduating!  Kayleen and Viviana had both attended RYLA and were very active in the Interact Club at La Quinta High School.  Kayleen was a club soccer player and plans to attend UCLA in the fall to study communications.  Both Kayleen and Viviana stated that time management was their biggest challenge in high school as they tried to balance class during the day with their extracurricular activities plus 4-5 hours of homework each night.  Viviana plans to attend COD in the fall where she plans to study Biology with the hopes of going into research or possibly teaching here in the Coachella Valley someday.  These girls were definitely the cream of the crop and our scholarship committee did a great job of singling them out to receive our Rotary scholarships this year.  As Greg Lane so succinctly put it, “They are our hope for the future”.  OK, to be honest, Greg stumbled around trying to say it until Allan blurted it out and everyone agreed!  Good luck to all of our scholarship recipients this year!

President Tom called the meeting to a close at 1:20 PM with the Four Way Test.
