President Sandy Stewart called the 46th meeting of the 27th year of our La Quinta Rotary Club to order and had Adrian Gyzi to lead us in the pledge.  Corry Hunter followed the flag salute with a short, but very nice invocation.

Dick, Nick, and Dan are greeted by Tom, Doug and Baird

At the greeting table this week was Tom McDermott taking attendance, Doug Motz selling lunch tickets and Baird Boucher selling Raffle tickets.

There were NO visiting Rotarians in attendance today.  John Watkins was a guest of the Andersons and our good friend Preston Wells from our neighborhood Chevy-Cadillac dealer also joined us.

President Sandy with several Rotary Awards for 2014

President Sandy made the following announcements:

Our Club will be “dark” for our previously scheduled meeting on July 4th… dark of course means that there will be no meeting on that day and even though you are not required to make-up a dark meeting, it is always fun to visit another club and do so!

The next club board meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 2nd or 9th, (Sandy wasn’t sure since she will no longer be the president then) at Baird Boucher’s (Wholesale Jewelry) store in La Quinta starting at 5:30 PM.

Our last social event of the Rotary year is the Demotion party to be held on Saturday (on June 28th) at the La Quinta Resort.

President Sandy and David Archer with Community Service Awards

President Sandy shared with the club the news that the City of La Quinta selected The Rotary Club of La Quinta to receive the Community Service Award.  This is a tremendous honor and one that President Sandy said she shares with each club member and acknowledged all the hard work that the membership has put forth this past year to earn this very prestigious award.

With over $200.00 in the jackpot this week Helen Anderson managed to draw a white marble and win only $5.00.  The only one besides Helen who seemed disappointed was her husband Dick!

Sandy and Dick present John Watkins with a Paul Harris Fellowship

John Watkins is the head of the County of Riverside Environmental Health Department whose help and guidance made our East Valley Water Project a reality.  He was granted this honor for doing things “The Rotary Way” according to Dick Anderson who made the presentation.  Congratulations John!

The lunch choices today were the now infamous Cliff House $18.00 cheese burger and fries, the traditional Chicken Caesar salad with fresh parmesan cheese and homemade Caesar dressing, or a bowl of Vegetable Beef soup accompanied by ½ a grilled cheese sandwich, all served with a nice slice of Ice Cream Pie to top everyone’s meal off!

Allan getting ready to lighten some wallets!

Allan Levin stepped up to the podium and immediately turned his attention to Doug Motz who was also an award winner (as well as his wife) being selected by the City of La Quinta for the 2014 Business of the Year and his wife Carole was named Ambassador of the Year!   Doug proudly paid his recognition on his first check from his new checking account at Rabobank!  Chris McCullough and Dick Jandt both promised to pay for their upcoming birthdays, Ed Casey donated 10% of his winnings at the local tables, Brett Anderson paid for a no make-up, Sandy Stewart paid for the awards from the City of La Quinta and finally Mayor Don Adolph for his grandson’s graduation.  Total take for the day was a paltry $125.00 which of course did not make Allan very happy.  Bring your wallets next Friday as Allan will likely try to make up for today’s poor showing!

Andy and Chris volunteered to do "Craft Talks" today

Today we were very fortunate to have the two of our own present what are usually referred to as “craft talks”.   First up was Chris McCullough who shared with us that he is a 3rd generation banker who in 1968 married his high school sweetheart and they have been enjoying the happily ever after for 46 years now!  She was the class valedictorian and he was, well… not! Chris was drafted into military service when our country was engaged in Viet Nam and wisely elected to join the National Guard.  Despite his best efforts to not make a career in the family business he eventually gave in and has since worked with 11 different banks (14 if you count mergers and acquisitions) advancing in salary and title with each job change.  Chris is currently the Senior Vice President, Manager and Team Leader at Rabobank in La Quinta.

Next up was Andy Lorenz.  Andy began his presentation by enlightening the membership about an organization that he and at least one other club member belong to known as SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives).  It is a volunteer business counseling service that involves one day a week of service which Andy freely admits usually works out to about THREE DAYS!  After which Andy shared with us his adventures in Garage Door Opener Land where he upgraded from a squeaky, groaning, 10 year old ¼ HP motor to a new Lift Master from Sears with a ¾ HP motor that is nearly silent!  The best part is the APP that is available for his cell phone that not only lets him know if the door is opened or closed, but also allows him to remotely control the door’s operation from his phone!  The men folk in the audience were all enraptured by Andy’s presentation about the garage door opener and on the edge of their seats hanging on every word uttered when President Sandy, stifling a yawn asked Andy to step aside and allow our Guest John Watkins a few moments of his time to update us on the progress of the East Coachella Valley Water Project.  Much to the disappointment of the testosterone driven club members Andy graciously yielded the floor.

John Watkins gave us a brief update on the progress of our water project letting us know that we have completed the installation of the individual filter systems at 5 trailer parks totaling 75 to 80 units servicing approximately 400+ people.  We still have two more parks identified and scheduled for filter installation after which there are possibly 10 more parks that we can approach for participation.

President Sandy closed out the meeting leading the members in the four way test.
